Deep Creek Ice 2007
Tournament Results Sunday, February 25th 2007

What a tough day of fishing!  After the beautiful day fishing with the kids on Saturday - so warm you had to shed jackets  to avoid sweating - Sunday's weather threw everything she had at us.  Gusty winds, heavy snow showers to start followed by driving sleet then heavy rain made folks hunker down in their shanties.  The competitors who found that drive to face the elements and keep mobile by drilling lots of holes paid off.

The TOP 4:
Right to Left #1 Randy Geyer; #2 Ken Askins, #4 Ben Olson, Missing #3 Toby Seiders

The WINNER, Randy Geyer (brother of the "Ice Master" Steve Geyer), found a few pockets of willing fish and pounded them for a winning basket of 10 fish weighing in at 9.32# almost 3 pounds more than the closest competitor.  Randy caught a few on Jiggin Raps, but most came from Northland Tackle EYE-DROPPER SPOON with a synthetic fish eye.  He also hooked up a Northern, Small Mouth and Walleye while fishing.

Ken Askins placed 2nd and attributed his success to using the FISKAS Wolfram Jigs tipped with artificial Nuggie tails from LITTLE-ATOM.  The Tungsten Wolfram Jigs fished heavier in the deep water and allowed Ken to get back down quickly to the fish once he found them.

Toby Seiders placed 3rd and has remained a consistent Top 5 competitor for the past 5 years and 4 tournaments.  Toby fishes for the agressive fish drilling lots of holes and using larger baits.  Toby also runs a taxidermy business so some of you may want to look him up if you ever need a quality mount for that hog perch or walleye!

Ben Olson placed 4th close on the heels of Toby Seiders.  Ben drilled a lot of holes.  He started with a larger search bait using a FISKAS Vertical Jig trying to find the aggressive fish.  With only 3 fish in the bucket by 10:30, Ben changed tactics.  He downsized to a Black  4mm Wolfram Jig  with white spots and caught 4 lunkers in the last 25 minutes he fished all in the pound range, including the 1.48# hog.  He broke his 'lucky' jig off in the mouth of his last fish causing him to pack up and go to weigh ins [yes, we retrieved it to fish again!].  Guess I need to show him how to tie on a jig again, who knows what he could have weighed in if he had dropped back down to catch another 2-3 fish...  :o)

While Egis did not finish in the money for the Top 4, he has consistently finished high in the standings over the past few tournaments.  Egis is a finesse fisherman who uses Palm Rods with extremely sensitive bite indicators (spring bobbers) very light lines and tungsten jigs in the traditional Mormyska style fishing.  Competitors like Egis bring a whole new dimesion to traditional ice fishing strategies.  He is always willing to share ideas and educate other fishers in a new approach.

BIG Fish - Since we had a tie for biggest perch with monster 1.61 pounder's, we awarded the Big Fish Prizes to both Toby Seiders and Eric Henderson.  Congratulations to you both!

Thanks to Bill's Outdoor Center for donating swivel bucket seats, electronic hand warmers, a Paulin Heater/Cooker and Trout Majic lure kit; to J.Higley and Frozen Puppy for the custom ice rods; and several prizes from Your Bobbers Down and FISKAS.  The Paulin Heater/Cooker went to Steve Ice Master" Geyer and The Grand Prize Aqua View Scout 2 went to Lee Snyder!  This was the 2nd Grand Prize winner for Lee as he won theAqua View  at the last tournament!  Bill's Outdoor Center traded Lee up for a gas powered auger!  Now Lee is really equipped to catch the leaders for the next tournament!  Contrats to all the winners and participants - can't wait to do it again in 2008!!
